Solarpro and LONGi collaborate on Europe’s largest back-contact solar plant

European leading EPC and O&M contractor of PV and BESS systems Solarpro is building what will be the largest solar power plant in Hungary, using photovoltaic modules from industry leader LONGi. Located in the northern county of Heves, the 450-megawatt project will deploy nearly 700,000 modules from LONGi’s ultra-efficient Hi-MO9 product series. The plant also marks an expansion of Solarpro’s partnership with LONGi, following a 176 MW solar park the two companies partnered on last year in Studina, Romania.

With a peak capacity of 450 MW, the new plant is expected to generate 470 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year, enough electricity to power around 106,000 households annually.

Replacing fossil fuel use, the project’s clean energy output can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 415,000 tons every year, the equivalent of removing over 100,000 gas-powered cars from the road.

Solarpro chooses LONGi’s back contact technology for watershed project

The Hi-MO9 solar module offers the plant the advantage of LONGi’s back contact (BC) technology, a complex engineering and design upgrade that reduces micro-cracking in the glass by 50% compared to traditional modules, increases electricity generation by up to 8%, and safeguards the module’s long-term performance – particularly under the sometimes-tough conditions present in northern rural Hungary, like high heat, dust, and cloud cover.

The 450 MW photovoltaic plant will be Hungary’s biggest

The BC module’s benefits also compound over the three decades of the product’s lifespan, meaning Solarpro’s new plant can anticipate more efficient production as well as more cost-effective, more reliable clean power for the area’s energy consumers.

Leon Zhang, President of LONGi Europe, said: “It’s an honour to supply Solarpro the modules for this landmark Hungarian project. In partnering with one of Europe’s leading project developers, we’re able to contribute to the region’s clean energy future and, at the same time, to set a new technological standard. At LONGi and Solarpro, we’re both committed to innovation and long-term sustainability, so we’re looking forward to continuing the cooperation.”

Krasen Mateev, CEO of Solarpro, said: “We are proud to join forces with LONGi once again on this major project in Hungary. At 450 MW, the solar plant will be Europe’s largest back-contact installation and a milestone in Solarpro’s mission to deliver reliable, high-efficiency clean energy across the region. The advanced technology of the Hi-MO9 was a clear choice to maximize the project’s performance and long-term reliability. By combining Solarpro’s EPC expertise with LONGi’s innovation, we are setting a new standard for utility-scale solar in Europe.”

Renalfa IPP expands its Tenevo, Kaolinovo PV plants in Bulgaria with batteries

Vienna-based Renalfa IPP commissioned a 65 MW / 260 MWh battery energy storage system within its hybrid power plant project in Tenevo. Also in Bulgaria, the joint venture expanded its Kaolinovo solar power plant to 33 MW and added a BESS of 33 MW in operating power and 110 MWh in capacity.

One of the biggest hybrid power plants in Southeastern Europe is gradually coming together. Renalfa IPP, which last year marked the start of the BESS boom in Bulgaria, said it added a battery system of 65 MW in capability and 110 MWh in capacity to the Tenevo solar power plant.

Project firm Tenevo Solar Technologies is a joint venture with Denmark-based Eurowind Energy. Renalfa IPP, headquartered in Austria’s capital city, is itself a joint venture, established by clean energy and e-mobility company Renalfa Solarpro Group and French renewable energy infrastructure fund manager RGreen Invest.

Ultimately, the plan is to build a 250 MW wind farm at the Tenevo site, in Yambol province in Bulgaria’s southeast. The first 69 MW in peak capacity of the solar power plant came online two months ago, within a 237.6 MW project.

Tenevo BESS to grow to 315 MW

Tenevo is one of the biggest co-located BESS projects in Europe to date, according to Renalfa IPP, which added that it surpassed 1 GWh of energy storage in operation.

The firm aims to increase the battery facility to 315 MW and 760 MWh by early next year, when it expects to complete the solar park as well.

Solarpro Bulgaria builds both battery storage facilities

The project manager for the Tenevo BESS is Solarpro Bulgaria, part of Renalfa Solarpro Group, while Hithium and Kehua supplied the equipment. Solarpro and Hithium established cooperation two years ago and recently expanded it.

The same affiliate was the project manager and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the expansion of the Kaolinovo photovoltaic park in northeastern Bulgaria. Renalfa IPP said it grew to 33 MW in peak capacity from 10 MW, while a BESS of 33 MW and 110 MWh was also added. The facility was built in 2012.

Renalfa IPP is also active in Hungary, Romania, and North Macedonia, where it is about to add batteries to its Oslomej PV plant. In the last update, it said it has 554 MW in operational generating assets, BESS of 455 MW and 1.01 GWh in total, and over 1 GW of projects in late-stage development.

HiTHIUM, Solarpro partner to develop long-duration energy storage in Eastern Europe

China-based HiTHIUM and Solarpro Holding have signed a 2 GWh master supply agreement for battery energy storage systems.

HiTHIUM is a global provider of long-duration energy storage (LDES) technology, while Solarpro Holding is an EPC provider of photovoltaic and battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Europe.

The agreement will support multiple utility-scale projects across Eastern Europe, including but not limited to Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and North Macedonia – which are accelerating renewable deployment as part of their energy transition strategies, according to HiTHIUM.

HiTHIUM will supply its bespoke DC block solutions

Under the agreement, HiTHIUM will supply its bespoke direct current (DC) block solutions, applying the ∞Power 6.25 MWh BESS with high-performance batteries of 1,175 Ah and 587 Ah.

The devices will be deployed exclusively in several utility-scale projects across Europe, HiTHIUM stressed.

DC block is the basic unit of a large BESS and a ready-to-deploy solution.

HiTHIUM expressed the opinion that intraday market volatility and cannibalization of photovoltaics can be addressed mostly by LDES solutions.

Li: We will deliver projects that turn renewables generation into dispatchable, flexible, and reliable resources

According to Kelson Li, HiTHIUM Europe Senior Director of Sales, Eastern Europe’s energy transformation requires energy storage solutions that go beyond short-term balancing.

“By combining HiTHIUM’s industry-leading long-duration energy storage technology with Solarpro’s deep regional experience in large-scale renewable energy integration, we will deliver projects that turn renewable generation into dispatchable, flexible, and reliable resources, advancing the region’s clean energy transition,” he underlined.

Nenov: LDES is a next critical technology upgrade of Europe’s electricity generation mix

Konstantin Nenov, Solarpro Chairman, said his company sees LDES as the next critical technology upgrade of Europe’s electricity generation mix.

“Partnering with HiTHIUM allows us to combine their advanced BESS technology with our proven track record in designing, integration and delivering complex renewable and storage projects across the region,” he stated.

HiTHIUM and Solarpro have already collaborated on landmark projects in Bulgaria and Hungary that were commissioned in 2024 and 2025.
