Nofar Energy launches work on Romania’s largest solar park

Israel’s Nofar Energy has begun construction of the 282 MW Corbii Mari solar park in Romania, with plans to connect it to the grid next year. The project is being financed from a recently secured EUR 192 million financing package that also covers the company’s two other large solar facilities in Romania.

The financing for Nofar’s projects was arranged by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The bank is providing a EUR 64 million loan, with the remaining EUR 128 million mobilized from commercial lenders.

In addition to Corbii Mari, the financial package covers the Iepurești II and Slobozia solar parks. The total capacity of all three projects is 531 MW, and the planned annual electricity production is 676 GWh.

Two solar parks are zero-subsidy projects, while the third has secured a contract for difference

Corbii Mari and Iepurești II will sell electricity on Romania’s competitive day-ahead market, while Slobozia will benefit from a 15-year contract for difference (CfD), according to an EBRD press release.

In late 2023, when Nofar acquired the Corbii Mari project, it was announced that the solar power plant would produce 362 GWh of electricity a year, enough to meet the needs of around 160,000 households.

There are several solar projects in Romania larger than Corbii Mari in various stage of development. These include the 1 GW Dama Solar, developed by Czech company Rezolv Energy, and the 300 MW Butimanu project, implemented by the investment division of Sweden-based Ingka Holding, the largest IKEA franchisee company.

Austria-based Enery is preparing to begin construction works early next year on a photovoltaic facility of 750 MW in peak capacity just outside of Bucharest.

Given the longer completion timelines for these projects, Corbii Mari is expected to be Romania’s largest solar park for a time, local media reported. The top spot is currently held by Econergy’s Rătești solar power plant, with an installed capacity of 155 MW.

Nofar is also building its Ghimpați solar project near Bucharest, with an installed capacity of 146 MW. Earlier this year, the Israeli company said it had connected to the grid its solar park in Ada, the largest such system in neighboring Serbia.

Econergy to assume 100% ownership of Romania’s biggest solar park, add batteries

Econergy agreed to buy out Nofar’s 50% stake in the 155 MW Rătești photovoltaic plant, the largest in Romania. The next step is to add a 120 MW battery energy storage system.

Econergy Renewable Energy said its subsidiary Econergy International, in which it holds 75.2%, has signed an agreement with Nofar Energy to acquire the partner company’s entire 50% stake in the Rătești solar power plant. The facility northwest of Bucharest, in Argeș county, is the largest in Romania. It has 155 MW in peak capacity.

Following the transaction, Econergy will hold 100% ownership and assume control of the shareholder loan previously provided by Nofar, of EUR 14.9 million, according to the update. The total consideration for the transaction is €45.6 million, payable in three instalments through June 2026.

Both companies are based in Israel. Econergy expects a capital gain of EUR 13 million from the deal. Like with some of its other investments in Romania, it plans to add a 120 MW battery energy storage system (BESS). The operator values the investment at EUR 32 million.

The battery storage facility is expected to enter commercial operation in the second quarter of next year, Econergy revealed. It would generate an additional EUR 15 million in annual revenue and EUR 12 million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization – EBITDA, the announcement reads.

Econergy said its portfolio of solar, wind and storage projects in Romania amounts to 3.5 GW. It includes 473 MW in operation or facilities that are ready to connect, 763 MW under construction and 395 MW scheduled to begin construction by the end of the year. Total project pipeline exceeds 14 GW.

Nofar Energy set to secure financing for 515 MW of solar in Romania

Israeli renewables company Nofar Energy is set to secure a EUR 68 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for three large-scale photovoltaic projects in Romania, with a combined capacity of 515 MW, including the 265.5 MW Corbii Mari solar park.

The EBRD’s loan, with an expected approval date of September 10, 2025, will be disbursed to Nofar’s three Romanian subsidiaries – Corbii Mari Solar Plant, Aviv Renewable Investment, and Slobozia Solar Plant.

Nofar’s firms intend to build a 175.7 MW solar farm in Iepurești, a 74 MW solar farm in Slobozia, both in Giurgiu county, and a 265.5 MW solar farm in Corbii Mari, Dâmboviţa county, according to the EBRD.

The three solar parks are expected to generate 676 GWh of electricity annually. Their operation is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 280,000 tons annually, the bank noted.

The Corbii Mari solar park, spanning a total of 290 hectares, would be located near the Romanian capital, Bucharest. Given its size, the project is divided into six lots, Romanian news portal Profit.ro reported.

Nofar operates the largest existing photovoltaic park in Romania, of 155 MW, located in Rătești in Argeș county.

There are other major photovoltaic projects in Romania larger than Corbii Mari, in various stages of development, including one of over 1 GW, under development in Arad county by Czech company Rezolv Energy.

Ingka Investments, the investment division of Sweden-based Ingka Holding, the largest IKEA franchisee company, is building its first solar power plant in Romania. The Butimanu project is for 300 MW in peak capacity, it recently said.

Nofar Energy inks deal for 265 MW solar power plant near Bucharest

The operator of the biggest solar power plant in Romania is about to start building a much bigger facility. Nofar Energy signed a turnkey contract including operation and management for a 265 MW system in Corbii Mari in Dâmboviţa County.

Just west of Bucharest, one of the largest photovoltaic projects in Romania is nearing materialization. A consortium of COX Energy from Spain and domestic firm AJ Construction, part of AJ Brand, is the designated contractor and operator for a proposed 265 MW solar power plant in Corbii Mari. A multijurisdictional team of Clifford Chance lawyers, coordinated by its Bucharest office, advised Nofar Energy, the developer, and revealed the news.

The small commune is in Dâmboviţa county. The Israeli company acquired the project in late 2023.

The Clifford Chance Badea law office said the Corbii Mari endeavor is the fourth engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and operation and maintenance (O&M) contract in which it assists Nofar Energy. The overall collaboration concerns renewable energy projects in Romania for over 650 MW, it added.

Nofar recently said is meeting the timelines for its key projects in the country including Ghimpați (146 MW) and Iepurești (169 MW) and Slobozia, of 74 MW. The last of the three won government support through a contract for difference (CfD) at the country’s first auction. The Israeli company added that it has a project portfolio of 970 MW and 120 MWh. The latter item apparently concerns battery storage.

In addition, Nofar Energy said last month that it connected to the electricity grid its solar park in Ada, the largest such system in neighboring Serbia.

Nofar Energy commissions Serbia’s largest solar park

Israeli company Nofar Energy said its photovoltaic park in northern Serbia of 27 MW in peak capacity began delivering electricity to the grid. The project consists of two adjacent units, Ada1 and Ada2, connected to the distribution grid.

After installing Romania’s largest solar power plant in a partnership, Nofar Energy now operates the largest photovoltaic park in Serbia as well. The Israel-based company, which nine months ago started building it the municipality of Ada in the country’s north, said the facility is online.

Notably, the solar park at the Utrine site consists of two units, Ada1 and Ada2. They have connection points of just under 10 MW each and operate within Serbia’s power distribution network. There is no PV system yet on the Balkan country’s transmission grid.

Project is worth EUR 25 million

The solar park spans 30 hectares on a 116-hectare plot, planned for the solar park’s expansion. Nofar Energy has launched the projects, worth EUR 25 million in total, via its subsidiaries Forest Energy and Energia Solis. The company estimated annual output at 33.2 GWh.

Turkish company Girişim Elektrik is the contractor.

Nofar Energy said its portfolio of operational and projects under construction amounts to 2.4 GW of solar power and 1.2 GWh of energy storage. The company secured an overall EUR 110 million loan in August in Romania for PV plants Ghimpați, which it started building in the meantime, and Iepurești. The two locations in the Iepurești area in Giurgiu county are envisaged for a combined 315 MW in peak capacity.

Serbia planning to add 177 MW in connection capacity through auction mechanism, 1 GW within strategic partnership

The Ministry of Mining and Energy of Serbia said in November that the country hosted 166 MW in solar power capacity. Last month, at its second round of wind and solar power auctions, it allocated the entire PV quota of 124.8 MW in grid connection capacity. The five winning projects are for 176.7 MW overall, also in alternating current or AC. They get contracts for difference (CfDs) and power purchase agreements (PPAs).

A strategic partnership is underway with Hyundai Engineering and UGT Renewables for a group of solar power plants of 1.2 GW in overall peak capacity. It translates to 1 GW in transmission grid terms. The companies are also tasked with installing battery energy storage systems with at least 200 MW in combined capability and a maximum of 400 MWh in capacity.
