           Post Event Report 2015

The opportunities and perspectives of the SE European market

Security of energy supply, fast climate change, strong economic and social benefits have prompted many countries in South-East Europe to diversify their energy mix and to reduce the import of fossil fuels, keeping money circulation within the regional economy.

The Region has a great potential for utilization of the renewables. Well-developed agriculture and forestry industries, availability of organic waste are a prerequisite for biogas, methane and biomass production. The decentralized solar electricity generation for heating and cooling is encouraging, too. A very perspective market segment is the realization of waste-to-energy projects through public private partnerships.

Countries with a sea outlet have the opportunity to drive forward the ‘blue energy’ sector and only 40% of the hydro energy sources is developed in SE Europe.

The energy systems transformation will need a new grid that combines capacity for high volume transfers and distribute energy with smart power management.

Investments for improvement of energy efficiency in private and public buildings as well as in industry are coming – the South-East European countries are developing also strategies for zero energy buildings.

The CO2 reduction in transport sector is the other priority issue and in the Region solutions for replacement of the fossil fuels with alternative low carbon fuels are sought. In terms of e-mobility, the South-East Europe is at its early stage and governments are going to stimulate this emerging industry. According a recently research at the end of 2014 in Bulgaria there were registered 497 electric vehicles – 36% more than the previous year and 1031 hybrid vehicles  – 61 % more than 2013.

24th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE) in Amsterdam

csm_intestazione_670x80_2016_AMSTERDAM_ok_49c8720d80The European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE) is a world class annual event which, since 1980, is held at different venues throughout Europe.

The EUBCE covers the entire value chain of biomass to conduct business, network, and to present and discuss the latest developments and innovations, the  vision is to educate the biomass community and to accelerate growth.

The EUBCE will host a dynamic international Exhibition for companies and research labs to showcase their latest products and bringing scientists, technologists and key players together with leading Biomass industries and organizations.

Message from the Technical Programme Chairman

Dr. David Baxter European Commission, DG JRC Institute for Energy and Transport - IET

Dr. David Baxter
European Commission, DG JRC
Institute for Energy and Transport – IET

Dear Participant of the 24th European Biomass Conference

On behalf of the scientific and industry committee, it is a great pleasure to invite you to be part of the 24th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE). The conference has a great tradition extending over the last 30 years addressing topics from biomass itself, to conversion processes for biofuels, bioenergy and biorefineries, to industrial applications of research results and to political policies and impacts on the environment. Since the 22nd EUBCE we have fully integrated industry presentations into the core programme in order to showcase deployment of the very many innovative technologies that have emerged over recent years. At the 23rd EUBCE we dedicated a clear place in the programme to highlight roles for integration of biomass and bioenergy in developing energy supply infrastructures.

There is a pressing need for renewable energy growth to meet political targets for 2020 and beyond. There is an even more pressing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions if a two degree centigrade global temperature rise above the preindustrial average is not to be exceeded. All uses of biomass need to be carefully considered. This means that biomass use must be environmentally sustainable and that genuine savings of greenhouse gas emissions are achieved when fossil-based products, energy and fuels are replaced. Most significant is that industry is able to achieve both environmental and economic sustainability when scientific discoveries are integrated into industrial concepts and deployed at commercial scale.

Growth of renewables in the energy sector, particularly of solar and wind energy, presents substantial challenges in terms of balancing energy supply with energy demand. Biomass and bioenergy are starting to play a significant role in the development of systems that can provide stable energy supply that closely matches demand. It is already obvious that individual renewable energy sectors cannot develop in isolation because each has an impact on others in the supply of energy. The 24th EUBCE in 2016 will continue to address all aspects that relate to biomass and bioenergy, not least the role of biomass in the emerging bioeconomy.

There will continue to be a strong focus on interactions between researchers, industry and policy makers for all branches of biomass, bioenergy biomaterials and biochemicals that are contributing to an emerging low carbon society. We still need to focus on how scientific innovations can be more efficiently exploited, what are the needs of the cutting edge industries leading the way with scaling up of technologies, what are the research priorities in the minds of industry and policy makers and how can environmental sustainability be maintained and simultaneously economic sustainability achieved.

The exhibition will continue to provide a platform for interaction. There will of course be plenty of opportunities for organisations, projects and consortia to hold side events (meetings, seminars and workshops) on the conference site.

The call for abstracts is open until October 30th 2015. Please have a close look at the Topics in the programme and see how you can best contribute to the closer interaction whether you are a researcher, an industry person or a policy maker working with biomass. We look forward to assembling an exciting and rewarding programme for Amsterdam in 2016.

What will the conference cover?

At this pivotal point for the global energy sector, the conference is designed to provide a platform for knowledge exchange on the latest scientific results, developments in policies and industrial progress of this global energy technology.

The conference will address the major challenges that the biomass community is facing today, including the sustainability of supplies, the role of biomass as a source in integrated energy systems, the development and application of new technologies as well as the progress towards a comprehensive global energy mix.

Knowledge exchange is essential to find answers to the questions of the current debate on biomass exploitation. The following topics and more will form the basis of the plenaries, orals and posters of the Conference Programme.
-What needs to be done in order to ensure that biomass can increase its position in the global energy mix?
-How can all branches of biomass, bioenergy, biomaterials and biochemicals contribute to an emerging low carbon economy?
-How can we best plan and design bioenergy processes in order to effectively fit into developing power grids that are increasingly fed with variable supplies from wind and solar?
-What are the plans of the major international energy companies and the new technology pioneers?
-How do we make best use and reuse of biomass resources in Europe and globally?
-How will we ensure the sustainable use of our resources?

Exhibition & Conference for SE Europe on Emergency, Rescue-, Safety Management and Control

Date: 11 – 13 March 2015
Frequency: Annual
Organizer: Via Expo
Venue: Inter Expo Center, Sofia, Bulgaria

Due to the increasing climate variability and more frequent industrial accidents over the last few years, the issues like  emergency, rescue-, safety- management and control attain extreme significance for the Region of South-East Europe. These topics will be considered as a NEW SECTION in the SE European Environmental Exhibitions & Forum that will be held in 2015 from 11 to 13 March in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The objectives of ‘Save the Life’ are to increase the awareness of the international disaster experience and to transfer  the knowledge of international response systems and coordination mechanisms. It will help for better teamwork capability in the rescue teams and sharing the existing know-how. South-East Europe felt nearly all types of natural disasters in the last years. They have cross border effects and can potentially threaten entire areas in neighboring countries.

The invited visitors will be experts in the field of emergency management: infrastructure operators, senior managers and decision makers from anti-fire departments, disaster-relief, rescue, military and government organizations as well as private security service providers, municipality and business leaders.

The concept of disaster financing will be also discussed. The society demand for information on natural hazard risks has grown explosively in recent years.
